Cratedigger Essentials: Daniel Steinberg
Cratedigger Essentials: Daniel Steinberg
1 February, 2011 | 2.04AMWith six years of singles under his belt, Daniel Steinberg
finally releases his debut album, the rather huffily titled Shut Up, on Frontroom Recordings. Fortunately, the tunes within don’t follow Steinberg’s advice—they’re a riot of disco samples, delirious voiceovers, and bizarre juxtapositions.
It’s just the kind of manic hijinks that Steinberg’s DJ sets are known for. We asked Steinberg to pick through his crates and select a few tried-and-true classics for our Cratedigger Essentials feature; read on to see what he chose.
Marmion, “Schöneberg” [Superstition]
This song is named after the Berlin district of Schöneberg. The track was brought to the clubs by Superstition![[a]](http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif)
, a Hamburg-based label. The original is a bit reminiscent of the bass line on Lil’ Louis’ “French Kiss.” I personally like to play the two together. In 2010, new remixes came out by DJ Hell and Strobe, among others. The original is still my favorite.
DBX, “Losing Control” [Accelerate]
Techno in its purest and most perfect form. A few simple words that say everything, words that make a club-goer’s heart race: “I’m losing control.” Chilling hi-hats together with psychotic vocals render this track unmistakable. Daniel Bell
was far ahead of his time with this one. You can integrate this song into today’s sets so well—the younger clubbers would never realize they’re listening to something 17 years old!
Laurent Garnier, “Crispy Bacon” [F Communications]
Laurent Garnier
created one of electronic music’s most memorable tracks without a hook, “Crispy Bacon.” The song is so timeless that I’m always happy to include it in my sets. Timeless tracks like these are so rare, and if clubs exist in 1000 years (I really hope they do!), “Crispy Bacon” will still have the same amazing effect on the dancefloor. You can also hear the legacy of the deep old-school chords in today’s techno productions. It is definitely my favorite Laurent Garnier record.
