Ion Ludwig [Thema]

If you like the creepy, darker sphere of minimal house then Ion Ludwig’s name should firmly stapled onto your tune-hunting radar by now.

His latest release on New York-based label Thema is another intelligent experiment in unsettling melodies and stylish weirdness.

Each of the four releases cast a light on the different sides to his music making persona.

‘Tool’ is an unnerving minimal house weird out, ‘Ralarga’ borrows its wonky, swinging melody from Luciano/Thomas Melchior’s ‘Father’ (probably unintentionally) but adds an alternative approach to the idea with a later topline melody which takes the track in a different direction.

‘Iqon’ takes thins in a funkier quirkier direction while ‘Euforiaph’s jerky percussion and funkiness is one of those tracks best suited for taking things up a gear when you’re warming up a party.

So who is Ion Ludwig?

A 22-year old Dutchie now living in Berlin, Ion runs his own label Quagmire and has released tracks on Alphahouse, Underline, Phonocult and Resopal among others.

As a kid he studied first classical music and electric guitar and then African percussion and he’s been producing since 2003.

He’s currently working on an artist album due to hit shops in 2008.
