Par Grindvik [Spectral Sound]
25 February, 2008 | 5.07PM- Section: Music Reviews
If you pay attention to techno, you’ll know all about the Swedish appetite for forward thinking electronica (just ask scene stalwarts like Jesper Dahlbäck or Adam Beyer).
So what’s the secret to their success?
According to electro housers Steve Angello and Sebastien Ingrosso (whose dad Vito is one of Sweden’s key early techno artists), it’s because without a kicking club scene like Berlin or London. there’s little else to do in Sweden other than make tunes.
Par Grindvik is another Swede making good use of his time by churning out big room, ballsy techno like this.
Describing this release as minimal is really stretching the term beyond its boundaries a little — but hey, dance music today is a confusing world, so let’s not get too bogged down in pigeonholes.
Title track ‘Continue Me’ is heads down — let’s ‘ave it — stripped back techno built around surging synth fx and an eerie hollow bell noise adding a stroke of darkness to the mix.
‘Continue in My Words’ takes the baton of the original and adds an extra 1000 watts of funk.
If you love the more wonky end of techno, then this is your track for really smashing those peak time moments.
Berlin scenesters Marcel Dettman and Ben Klock deliver a percussive retake on the title track that sounds like an early 1990s techno record with a big kick and even bigger clap.
Now that Par Grindvik’s a resident of Berlin, though, does that mean releases like this are going to slow down, now that there’s a little more to choose from in the club listings pages?
We think the temptation of the Panorama Bar won’t be enough to slow this talent down any time soon.
