9 November, 2008 | 11.34AMIf you didn’t know already, this is ‘that one’ from the charming French flick ‘Amelie’ - you know, the one with the twinkling pianos that plays regularly throughout the film as the doe-faced starlet bumbles about in Paris.
While to some this Haze-ified rework will sound somewhat on the twee side, those with a weakness for pretty, plaintive melodies will be overjoyed to see that this is finally available on Beatport.
Of course, it ain’t rocket science - Haze has basically looped the melody and underpinned it with an unobtrusive, gently moving tech-house groove, leading cynics to decry what they see as a lame rip-off of a beautiful original.
As is so often the case, though, the haters have missed the point - Jay clearly isn’t trying to better the original, rather re-use it in a context of a 4/4 track, allowing a brief moment of melodic bliss for DJs bored of the same grey-scale neo-deep house or crunchy ‘oompah’ minimalism.
Whether it will have the same mass crossover appeal as the similarly sample-heavy ‘Enfants’ remains to be seen, but it’s nonetheless a thoroughly sweet track that does justice to the movie, the composer, and indeed, to Jay Haze himself.
