Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts, Boulder CO, April 18-20 2008!
28 March, 2008 | 9.24AMThe upcoming Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts, taking place on April 18th-20th in Boulder, is the culmination of four years of contribution to the growing Colorado digital arts and music culture by the Communikey collective. Cultivated in the same state as Beatport’s home offices, the festival offers a uniquely Colorado approach to the North American electronic music festival.
Taking inspiration from Montreal’s MUTEK festival, the Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts offers a day of workshops and panel discussions on top of stellar musical lineups and new media installations. With an underlying focus on sustainability in digital arts culture, Communikey aims to create a dialogue on sustainability in digital culture. By adding this subtle flavor to the event, the festival organizers hope to create platform to begin finding answers to questions of not only ecological responsibility, but social and cultural as well.
Held at a variety of prominent Boulder locations, from the historic Boulder Theater to the beautiful new ATL&S Institute a state of the art multimedia arts facility, recently opened at the Colorado University campus, the event offer festival goers the chance to fully explore the beautiful city of Boulder, which can easily be done on bike or foot.
Hosting showcases pulled both from the ranks of Montreal’s MUTEK and Seattle, Washington’s Decibel festival, Communikey gives a shout out to those who inspired them to bring about their own North American digital arts event. These showcases bring acts such as Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Stephen Beaupre, Greg Skidmore and Jerry Abstract, to Colorado for the first time, making them extra special events.
Holding the hand of Colorado as it has become a stronghold in the center of the country for touring techno and experimental artists, Communikey has pulled together an amazing lineup for the festival’s Saturday night main showcase. This growing popularity has led to placing breakbeat luminary Tipper on the same stage as up and coming Swiss funk hero, Kalabrese in his first American appearance as a full band, the Rumpleorchestra, creating a program that highlights pioneering producers of late.
Beatport teams up with Communikey, further developing the localized electronic music industry. Beatport Afterhours features North American label rep Tom Hoch on the decks and the now New Mexico based minimal techno rocker Geoff White. As if that wasn’t enough, Sunday April 20, the festival hosts a free afternoon Tea Party in the Park, graciously opened by the legendary Clark Warner, former Minus label manager, a recent transplant to Denver.
The Communikey collective is stepping up to the plate for Colorado, furthering the burgeoning community on the map as a growing presence in the global techno scene. The inaugural Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts is a unique one to saw the least, when one might ask how technology based arts can flourish in the heart of America. The Communikey festival directors would answer this with, “We love techno, and so does everyone else. Everyone loves techno, they just don’t know it yet. That’s what we’re here for, providing access to this ever expanding global community of music, the universal language”.
