Coachella announces 2011 lineup

Goldenvoice has announced the lineup for this year’s edition of Coachella, to be held in Indio, California from April 15 – 17.

When it comes to rock and pop programming, there are no huge surprises; the roster is top-heavy with names like Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, Interpol, the Chemical Brothers, and Robyn. (OK, so maybe Duran Duran is a surprise. As are the Strokes!)

All the major indie players of the moment are there, of course: Cut Copy, Sleigh Bells, Tame Impala, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Ratatat, Best Coast, Glasser, and all your favorite Pitchfork types.

But the dance programming isn’t necessarily what you might expect. Read on for a breakdown of the lineup.

Despite Coachella’s hipster-friendly image, the festival has gone all-in on the biggest names in commercial house, particularly those pertaining to the Dutch/Swedish axis—Afrojack, Steve Angello, Axwell, Chuckie, Fedde Le Grand, Laidback Luke—and allies like Sasha, Erick Morillo, Paul van Dyk, and Joachim Garraud. (Where’s Sebastian Ingrosso?)

Dubstep, bass music and LA’s beat-music scenes have a significant foothold in the polo grounds, represented by Magnetic Man, Caspa, Kode9, Ramadanman, Roska, Joy Orbison, Mary Anne Hobbs, Mala, Goth Trad, Mount Kimbie, Zed Bias, Ras G, SBTRKT, Nosaj Thing, Take, and Daedelus. (Then there’s Skrillex, whom you may or may not consider to be “real” dubstep, but we’re not going to get into that argument here.)

There’s a solid drum ‘n’ bass contingent, with High Contrast, Breakage, DJ Hype, DJ Marky, and Andy C all on the lineup. Strangely, electro house seems relatively scarce, with just Boys Noize, Bloody Beetroots, Duck Sauce, and A-Trak on tap—plus DJ Zinc, whose career has spanned jungle, UK garage, and electro house. (We’re not really sure where to file him these days, to be honest—simply “crack house,” we suppose.) Aside from Yelle, what happened to the Ed Banger-type artists?

And despite the growing popularity of underground house and techno in LA, thanks to the likes of Droog, Crosstown Rebels, Culprit, and others, you won’t find much of it at Coachella: just Riva Starr, Green Velvet, Kyle Hall, and good ol’ “Papa” Sven Vath.
