Club Yellow Closing Week: Thursday “Distortion” with Fumiya Tanaka

“Distortion” is the party Fumiya Tanaka [a] used to throw between 1994-1997 at Yellow, when the techno scene was still in its early beginnings in Tokyo.

Back then, Fumiya Tanaka was known for hard minimal techno like Jeff Mills, though he currently plays more click/deep minimal style.

But, for this closing week, Fumiya Tanaka decided to do this party in style again.

However, his musical selection was not merely retrospective, although everyone expected Fumiya Tanaka to play hard minimal techno as he did back in ‘90s.

But he played click/deep minimal music like he currently does, mixing in some old tracks in between new stuff, as if he were saying, “Learn from the past but let’s move on”.

And that is what techno is all about—it is the music that keeps on moving forward.

And again, the vibe was amazing.

I ran into everybody who was deeply involved in the techno scene in Japan, and on the dancefloor people just kept moving on and on.

The number of dancers on the floor was consistent all the way through, till the close of the night, with everybody immersing themselves into minimal groove.

In the morning, Fumiya Tanaka played “Fumiya Classics” such as Galaxy 2 Galaxy‘s ‘Hi-Tech Jazz’ and Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’.

That brought back a lot of collective “memories of melodies”, but people weren’t crying; instead, they were smiling.

At the end of party, I heard that 888 people showed up—on a Thursday night!

Because 8 is lucky number in Japan, my friend said to me that it would bring good luck to Yellow.

No, this is not the end. This is the end of the beginning.

Techno rebels are not dead!
