Club review: Judgement Sundays - one of the reasons to visit San Antonio

Believe it or not, San Antonio isn’t all about sunburnt lager louts wearing football shirts and throwing up in the streets.

Judgement Sundays at Eden has always being a reason to visit the resort, and it looks like it’s becoming even more credible, with Pete Tong leaving Pacha to launch his Wonderland night at Eden and the arrival of the Ibiza Rocks hotel.

But the vibe in San An hasn’t changed at all; it’s still all about just having fun and not worrying about looking ‘cool’.

Judgement Sundays prides itself on being the busiest club in San Antonio and it’s easy to see why. With its enchanted garden theme, the indoor trees and plants can occasionally be seen through the dry ice, illuminated by a multitude of fairy lights, glow sticks and lasers.

Dancers with feather headdresses strut around like peacocks and two podium dancers even use a bright piece of yellow fabric to create the illusion of butterfly.

In some parts of the venue, the candled lighting and red muslin give the impression of Aladdin’s cave and there are plenty of wonders to catch your attention.

Entertainers in strange costumes emerge from every direction, where either a transvestite on stilts, a massive clown’s head or what appears to be an oversized cat can be seen purposely freaking out the more wasted of clubbers.

Everything that’s good about trance is magnified – the presence of the lasers, the number of podium dancers, the friendliness of the crowd – and you’re reminded why you became a trance music lover in the first place.

Tunes like ATB’s ‘9 PM (Till I Come)’ are blared out by Vicky Devine in the main room, who’s warming up for the likes of tech-trancers Sander van Doorn and Claudia Cazacu,/a> and Judge Jules and Rob Tissera, who, instead of trying to educate the crowd, play those trance anthems you want to hear.

For the more energetic clubbers, the back room – hosted by Kissdafunk – plays harder music with alternative sets from Rob Tissera and Judge Jules.

“The atmosphere in both rooms is amazing,” says Rob. “The two rooms complement each other perfectly and I think we’ve achieved our goal of creating the ultimate party within a party.”

So even though trance nights – which do tend to appeal to the occasional chav with a whistle – will never be considered to be ‘cool’ by those trendy people who pose in their enormous sunglasses and look on in distaste at anyone who appears to be enjoying themselves, it doesn’t matter, because the carefree attitude at Judgement Sundays means you’ll be having a much better night than them anyway.

It may be called Judgement Sundays, but no one here is judging anyone, so be yourself, let go and just have fun.
