Classic Records rides again

Classic Records rides again

The record label that started out by setting itself the impossible task of living up to its name is back.

When Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon drove past a roadside billboard advertising Cadbury’s ‘Classic’ chocolate bars while on a tour of the UK they obviously weren’t thinking of making life difficult for themselves.

Already set on the idea of starting a record label, the pair decided to name their imprint ‘Classic.’

Not content with the tall order of living up to their name, they also began their run of records by starting their catalogue numbering system at 100 and working down with each release — the idea being that by the time they reached zero they’d be able to bow out having earned a tidy sum of cash from an impressive release run of classic ‘Classics’ .

Luckily the label’s output lived up to its moniker and quickly became one of house music’s most essential bastions of the genre.

Records like Markus Nikolai’s ‘Bushes,’ Isoleé’s ‘Beau Mot Plage’ or DJ Sneak’s ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud’ established the label as one of dance music’s most innovative and exciting stables of music.

Unfortunately though, the advent of filesharing and the disastrous slide in vinyl sales that has blighted the industry in recent years lead to the label’s demise.

Now however Classic is back once again.

Rob Mello kicks off the next run of releases in September with a remix of ‘Critical’ by Fabrice Lig.

There will also be mixes of the much sought after single ‘Freaks,’ Derrick Carter mixes of ‘Stucco Homes’ and ‘Third Face,’ a remix of Isolee ‘Brazil.com’ by Henrik Schwarz and lots more to follow.

Classic will also be throwing parties to celebrate their return so expect to see Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon and Justin Harris plus special guests throwing it down just like before in true ‘Classic’ style.
