Christian Smith relaunches Tronic label
21 January, 2009 | 2.11PMTechno DJ Christian Smith
has just announced that he will relaunch his crossover house and techno label Tronic at the beginning of March.
The imprint had been stagnant since 2007.
When Christian Smith started Tronic, he encountered some resistance from record distributors who felt it would be commercial suicide to put out both house and techno. But Smith persevered and Tronic was one of the first labels to offer music that both house and techno DJs could play.
The first single to be released on the new Tronic will be Christian Smith and John Selway’s ‘Move!’ at the beginning of March, a track that was originally released on Carl Cox’s Intec label back in 2002.
With remixes by Swedish House Mafia don Steve Angello
and the Sasha-tipped Brazilian trio Dimitri Nakov
, Gabe
and Ritkam, it’s clear Smith hopes Tronic will once again appeal to DJs across the genre board.
“‘Move!’ was the start of our crossover sound. Not only did Sasha
license it for his legendary Ibiza Global Underground compilation, but everybody else from Danny Tenaglia
to Deep Dish
, and also some real techno purists like Jeff Mills
and Surgeon
rocked this track all the time,” explained Smith.
“These days I’m very happy that techno is slower and that house and techno DJs play a lot of similar tracks. At the end of the day it’s about good music.”
