‘Chick 1’ by Def Jaguar and its respective remixes showcase a full range of electro house styles.
As you’d expect, the original track is the best — it’s completely inspirational, and its minimalist style has given license to its remixers to go crazy.
4/4 Beats drive through ‘Chick 1’ and its groove is laid down by some soft but chunky hi-hats on the off beats.
The bassline is a warm analogue affair and as the track progresses you’re treated to a wah-wah synth line that represents its icing on the cake.
Also, keep your ears pricked for a cool vocodered ‘clap!’ vocal which punctuates halfway through the proceedings to instill a well-needed sense of progression.
Now, onto the remixes.
The Swen Weber one represents the current vogue of electro house well, featuring dirty, low-pitched synths that grind hard in between some thumping kick drums.
It’s not very melodic – more something for DJs to screw the dance floor with when club atmosphere is running high.
The Tronik Youth remix is a more abrasive version of the original, whilst the Djuma Soundsystem Disco Dub effort is the best of the bunch – a spaced out, spliff-induced roller.
