David E. Sugar [Brik A Brak]

David E. Sugar was championed originally by the “chip scene”, a movement that prides itself on re-wiring and re-inventing obsolete game consoles in order to extract the vintage sounds they can produce.

Whereas previous releases such as ‘Oi New York this is London’ seemed to fit in nicely with the glitch/blog/tweak house sub movements that are championed by bloggers across the world, Sugar’s latest release takes something of a punk funk soundtrack as its basis and undoubtedly benefits for this shift in musical direction.

Both ‘Chelsea Girls’ and ‘I Still Like Your Clothes’ seem, on first listen at least, to not have the immediacy of Sugar’s previous gameboy grime releases, but the higher production value coupled with the absence of the initially interesting but ultimately annoying LoFi aesthetic means that these are definitely growers.

In fact, repeated listens have meant that it soon becomes obvious that Sugar has increased and harnessed his knowledge of how to tease the best out of his obvious talent for melodic sweetness coupled with bouncy, grooving basslines.

Sitting somewhere between a Kitsune or DFA release, ‘Chelsea Girls’ has everything that today’s crop of club kids will go wild for.
