Check Dragonette for poptastic dance songs
8 May, 2007 | 1.42AMThe Anglo-Canadian marriage of Dragonette
is one I hope will blossom with many offspring if their eponymous Mercury album is anything to go by.
They’re the latest in a long-line of crossover electro-pop bands and have already scored a healthy hit with the slutty ‘I Get Around’; expect more of the same on the parent album.
Although sing-a-long songs like ‘Competition’ and ‘Jesus Doesn’t Love Me’ would equally sound at home on a Sugababes or Liberty X album.
Canadian singer Martina Sorbara, her husband Dan Kurtz, and partners Will Stapleton and Joel Stouffer, are already being tipped for greatness and on the strength of this hit-laden mixture of hooky songs, gangling guitar riffs, electro beats and ‘80s influences add our name to the tipsters.
Lyrically their songs are laced with irony, black-comic overtones and a mixture of pathos and patois, and I love ‘em all the more for it.
‘Competition’, ‘Take It Like A Man’ and ‘You Please Me’ all sound like future smashes.
