Catching up with Arno Cost
Catching up with Arno Cost
9 May, 2011 | 2.51AMIt has been a couple of years since we heard anything new from Arno Cost
, but the Parisian producer is making up for lost time with a brace of new productions dropping in quick succession. His collaboration with Arias
and the vocalist Michael Feiner, ”The Days to Come,” appeared on Big Beat/Atlantic Records just last month, and now “Lise” comes out on Sebastian Ingrosso’s Refune Records
imprint this week, on May 11. We caught up with Arno to find out what else he’s got up his sleeve for the coming months.
You have two new tracks at the moment; have you been spending lots of time in the studio lately?
Yeah, definitely. I started “Lise,” my new track, in January or February, but it has taken a while because I wanted it to come out as good as possible. I’m very pleased with the results and with how it’s turned out. “The Days To Come” is a peak track with Arias
and myself which was made about three years ago. It’s only now, though, that it’s finally out, and I’m really happy with the track. It has already received a lot of good support and a lot of DJs are coming back to me, telling me this track is huge. I received several messages just this morning telling me how much people like it. So I’m really happy with that track. But I’m still spending more and more time in the studio. I’m actually working in there right now. I’m doing a track with Martin Solveig
…. So yes, you can definitely say there’s a lot of studio stuff going on at the minute.
Are you consciously trying to get more music out this year, or has this flurry of productions happened naturally?
It was natural, really. I didn’t want to purposefully release the tracks at the same time, but it’s just happened like that. One was ready to come out and then the next one was ready at the same time – it was as simple as that. I am working a lot in the studio now because with music, I think it is very important to release more music every day and every month—otherwise people will forget you. I think some people won’t know as much about my music as they once did, because I haven’t released anything since 2009 – but now, it’s safe to say that I’m back!
How does producing music in the studio compare to playing it live in the clubs for you?
Making music, you are alone in the studio, you have a long time to make something from your ideas and your own mind. It’s a really cool and different approach to playing music live. Playing live, you only have two hours to show people what you’re about, but in the studio it’s really different. I prefer making music; I consider myself more of a producer than a DJ. When you produce your own track, it’s really nice to play it for people or in front of a crowd and then see how they react. But above all you need both. A good artist needs to do well at both.
Have you been pleased with the reactions “The Days To Come” has been getting so far?
Very pleased. I’m very happy. People have been waiting for this track for two years now, so when they heard that it was going to be out, I received a lot of messages from a lot of different people. I put a preview on SoundCloud and all the feedback has been really, really good. DJs like David Guetta
are saying it’s going to be a great record, and to have Pete Tong
playing it is great too.
How did that feel when Pete Tong played it on Radio 1?
Ah, it was great! It was not the first time he has played one of my records--he has played a few of them in the past, but I was really happy. It’s always great to be played by Pete Tong, it generates such good support from the UK. It’s a fantastic beginning.
How would you describe the sound you were going for with “Lise”?
I think it is progressive, melodic and with a big break. I love to make music that is not just about the club and putting your hands in the air. I want to make something in my tracks that makes you dream. So I think “Lise” is a great combination of all these things.
Where was it made?
My studio is at homem but sometimes I go to other studios in Paris to make some recordings and work with friends like Martin Solveig, who has his own studio too. I’m going to be in the studio with someone very famous in a few weeks to hopefully make a big track for the summer…. Watch this space!
Have you heard any feedback from people playing “Lise” at this year’s WMC?
I’ve seen lots of videos of some great people playing both of these tracks across WMC. It was great to see, especially as we gave it to only a few selected DJs such as David Guetta, Pete Tong, Axwell
and Sebastian Ingrosso
