Carl Craig and Gilles Peterson go head to head on bank holiday weekend

Two musical pioneers of music join forces for an assault on The End’s soundsystem.

The landscape of electronic music has been shaped by many people, but in years from now when people look back at the genre, there will be chapters dedicated to the contribution of the two figures who headline in The End’s main room on March 22nd; Carl Craig and Gilles Peterson.

Carl Craig was one of the second wave of producers to hail from the home of techno, Detroit.  Throughout his twenty year career he has always been an innovator, taking the techno sound and fusing it with elements of jazz and soul, in the process altering the course of electronic music forever.  His impact can be felt across dance music, even as far as drum & bass, with Roni Size citing Carl’s track ‘Bug In The Bassbin’ as giving birth to D&B.  He continues to be as inspirational and creative as ever in 2008, with his brand new album ‘Sessions’ released on K7! at the end of February.  The album is a two disc mix of unreleased classics, previously unheard remixes and some gems from his back catalogue.  He celebrates the launch of this album with a set in our main room.  Carl Craig has always been known as an incredible DJ, a selector who approaches even a DJ set as if creating a whole new tune from scratch, so expect something special.

Joining Carl in the main room for this special one-off party is Gilles Peterson, one of the UK’s most influential taste makers.  These two DJs have for many years enjoyed each other’s support and are two names revered around the globe for their contribution to music.  Gilles has spent the last two decades carving a name for himself as one of the UK’s finest A&Rs, best radio DJs and most respected purveyors of eclectic jazz and soul-tinged sounds in music.  His latest mix album, ‘Defected In The House’ has recently been released, with the third of its three discs containing specially commissioned tracks from the likes of Karizma, DJ Sneak and Carl Craig himself.  His Brownswood night here late in 2007 was a stormer, proving Gilles can still rock a big main room, and will be the perfect foil to Carl on March 22nd.

Up in AKA, Phonica’s Dan Foat and Ryan Shaw are hosting their night RADIO, with a very special and exciting guest.  DFA, home to LCD Soundsystem, have a seriously buzzy new project in the works; curiously known as Hercules and Love Affair.  This New York group is based around the production talents of Andrew Butler and evokes the sound of the underground disco of the late 70s, with a splash of 21st Century gloss.  The group has three vocalists, a singer-come-acid-house-DJ Kim-Ann; Nomi whose work has been compared to a cross between RZA and Sade; and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons.  They’ll be DJing in AKA, a performance that is genuinely well worth catching as, in a couple of months, their name is going to be everywhere.

On the Saturday of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend we’re all lucky enough to have two full days to recover from this, and after an onslaught from two bona fide legends in the main room and some of the freshest and most exciting new sounds in AKA, you’re gonna need it!
