Calling all hip hop freaks

As we’ve announced a few weeks ago, Beatport is deep in the process of developing and launching a fully focused storefront around the urban music community. This new site will be called Beatsource and will carry a similar look and feel to Beatport, but will only feature hip-hop and urban content.

DJs are the focus of our ambition. We are building Beatsource to service the needs of modern urban DJs who use digital content in their performance. We are looking to satisfy those DJs who want to purchase new music on a regular basis from a very reliable and authentic retailer committed to urban culture.

To ensure our authenticity, we’ve built an entirely new staff that comes unfiltered from hip-hop and urban music backgrounds. Some are DJs, while others are promoters, but all are pure hip hop heads. If we wanted to take the easy route, we could have done this years ago. But instead, we have taken our time and learned the digital retail space and built this business from the ground up with people who know DJing and perform in front of crowds on a consistent basis. Anything less would not be true.

The new team is being housed between our Denver and Berlin offices which keeps them in the heart of the music internationally. The goal is to bring the best content from around the world online at Beatsource. Similar to Beatport, we want Beatsource to be the first location for DJs and enthusiasts looking for the newest music. If you are a DJ, we want to be your store. Those of you looking for the hip-hop classics, we will be your store as well.

Content on BeatSource will be strictly limited to music that fits the urban music genre. There are entirely new genres and sub-genres being created to help organize categorized all the music for faster and easier shopping. Already our team has encoded over 30,000 tracks and should launch with a total closer to 50,000. Now that quantity may sound small compared to the bigger digital retailers, but remember, we focus on music that true DJs play, not just the hits. Over the coming months, this number will increase dramatically as we gain the support of the larger independent labels.

If you want to get a glimpse of the content that Beatsource will have, go to Beatport.com and click on the hip-hop genre. Once Beatsource is live, the hip-hop genre on Beatport will link directly to the Beatsource store.

As you can all imagine, we are extremely excited and proud to be launching this new retail storefront. It will take on a life of its own outside the shadows of the Beatport brand. Please go check out the site at Beatsource.com and get registered on our mailing list. We are sending periodic updates to that list. In the next few days, we’ll launch our first podcast, which is awesome. There is also a launch contest getting started that has a serious prize package.

Thanks for reading my blog and for your continued support and efforts towards making Beatsouce a true success.
