Bullet In The Head

With a title like ‘Bullet In The Head’ and some angry, red cover art, this track was always going to be bruising.

Its bassline is, for lack of better words, fucking wicked.

Drum & bass producers usually play out very distinct, one-key melodies these days, unlike the tech / electro house maestros that seem to experiment a little more.

But experiment Dkay [a] and Black Sun Empire [a] [l] do, with a screwed up, disgusting, monophonic bassline that, for certain, will twist the heads of anyone fortunate / unfortunate enough to have ingested narcotics before experiencing it.

The beats in ‘Bullet In The Head’ are juicy-as-hell, complete with syncopated congas, and there is this seriously cool, little brass stab in the middle of every four bars that you’ve just got to hear.

Throw in some filthy synths (that poke their heads into the mix when you least expect them to) and you’re looking at one of 2008’s best drum & bass tracks.

‘Day Away’ by Trei [a] is a more formulaic musical affair – but that’s not to take away from its greatness – expect brilliant synths and bashy drums complemented by a crazy, detuned, square-wave that sounds just sublime in a rave.

The piano melody that emerges at certain points is heart-rending stuff.

‘Day Away’ really does compete with ‘Bullet in the Head’ for “track of 2008” at the moment – and both add up to an unmissable release.
