Dr. Big Ass [Hit Beat Records]
27 February, 2008 | 4.49PM- Section: Music Recommendations
Whilst the cavemen of the drum & bass world still moan about decreasing vinyl sales, we at Beatportal know that the digital download market has enabled a whole new range of producers to get their sound out into the open.
The beautifully-named Dr. Big Ass comes with an unashamedly brazen drum & bass record in the curiously-titled ‘Lwis’ that is designed for the party.
Its horns wouldn’t be out of place in a 1920s jazz record – they flail all over the mix in every which way.
The funky instruments in this record also work a treat, and add up to something different from the norm in the jungle genre.
‘90 Age’ is a hell of a lot darker and angrier than ‘Lwis’, but still retains its funky elements.
It’s a persistent little bugger, so try before you buy.
As for ‘Junki’, here Dr. Big Ass really lives up to his name by letting loose a stinky bassline complete with beats that will clear a room in seconds (if it’s populated by classical music enthusiasts).
Does the gas mask worn by the strange character on the front of this EP translate to a subliminal message?
