Brokeback EP
Brokeback EP
Various Artists [Ibadan Records]
6 September, 2007 | 1.24PMLabel boss Jerome Sydenham has pooled an impressive five producers and four tracks for a gem of an EP on his ever-reliable Ibadan Records
.
The title track, ‘Brokeback’ by Sydenham and Willie Graf applies the pressure, mounting multiple layers of frequency spanning synths over a driving, almost Progressive style bass end.
Things do get over busy at certain points, which is why the track is most effective when it’s stripped back somewhat, post breakdown.
It’s difficult to not to use any cliqued terms to describe ‘36 Degrees’ by Sydenham and Kerri Chandler, but this track is pure old school bliss.
Simplicity is the key here of course, with merely a synth, chord progression and some creeping Detroit-esque strings to speak of.
Italian producer Ricky L threatens to bother the charts with ‘Your House’.
The track contains a vocal excerpt of an Alanis Morissette (I know!) record of the same name.
It sounds not too dissimilar to the Fish Go Deep ‘The Cure, The Cause’ from last year, done in the same sulky, yet soulful style.
You get a bit of classic Ibadan for your money finally, on Tony Watson’s ‘Passages’, a Tech house groover from way back in 2000.
