British dance mag M8 to be free

The British dance music press is set for a shake up after Scottish dance mag M8 announced that it’ll soon be a free publication. From November 1st, 20,000 copies of M8 will be given away free at ‘selected outlets’ in the country.

Another 20,000 copies of M8 will also be distributed at news outlets for just £1, dropping from £3.50.

M8’s new price strategy follows a financial model that was first introduced in the UK dance press by One Week To Live magazine.

At first One Week To Live only had a London-wide distribution network, but now around 22,000 copies of the magazine are distributed for free across England.

The news is likely to worry Mixmag and DJ Magazine’s owners - the price drop makes M8 a stronger competitor in a crowded marketplace.

Although M8 has also announced that alongside the price drop, it also plans to downgrade its content by introducing more ‘Saturday Night’ clubbing fashion-related articles.

That most probably more tits and arse, and less music and technology focus.

Mixmag recently posted a 5% pop decrease in circulation in the annual magazine ABC results.
