Britain’s The Sun pushes Ibiza coverage
2 June, 2008 | 2.24PMBritain’s top tabloid newspaper The Sun, infamous for its Page 3 topless models, sports coverage and sensationalism, is pushing major coverage of Ibiza this summer.
Under the banner of ‘Ibiza Exposed’, The Sun is producing a stream of content from the White Isle, that includes interviews with DJs, video footage, Ibiza travel tips and more.
The Sun is the biggest selling daily newspaper in the UK with an average circulation of over three million, so such major mainstream coverage is quite unnerving - for years Britain’s newspapers have declared Ibiza and dance music to be ‘dead’, but suddenly (for some reason) they think it’s cool again.
Scattered amongst the DJ interviews and travel tips is the usual sex-obsessed rubbish of The Sun, including pictures and videos of topless girls.
It’s also very UK-centric, with the majority of the Ibiza articles focused around UK-based DJs and promoters.
But the editorial is overwhelmingly positive, and if anything, it will encourage readers of The Sun to make a trip to Ibiza this summer.
The only problem is, with The Sun focusing on the sex are we likely to see an influx of below-par British holidaymakers only interested in getting drunk, getting laid, and fighting in San Antonio?
Does Ibiza need or want such tourists? Let us know your thoughts below.
