Boxcutter: TV Troubles

This week sees the release of The Dissolve, the expansive new album from Northern Ireland’s Barry Lynn, aka Boxcutter

While he’s hardly as doom-obsessed as his peers, Boxcutter’s releases have always tended to be pretty dark affairs, with dank, clanging percussion enveloped by deep, velvety tones. But one thing that sets him apart is his willingness to go out on a rhythmic limb: no cookie-cutter, half-step wobble in Boxcutter’s catalog, which has been moving further and further from pro forma dubstep on all his albums. Still, even fans of his breathtaking Arecibo Message may be surprised by the range showcased on The Dissolve.

“I’d rather win people over softly on this one,” he told Don’t Panic of the new album, but “soft” barely begins to describe it: the record is stuffed with ideas, from logey disco to Rhodes-washed electro-funk. There’s slow-motion house of the Space Dimension Controller variety, dreamy psychedelia, gooey 2-step garage, nervous techno and even a couple of soulful vocal cuts. Planet Mu [l], which has put out this album (as well as his three prior longplayers) should be very, very pleased about the way this one turned out. Respect!
