Bomb Alert! Vaggio - Vaggio EP

Ovum Recordings are closing out a solid run of summer releases with something of a head-scratcher: just who is Vaggio? All that Josh Wink and company will allow via the official Ovum Facebook page is that Vaggio is a secret collective “from (DJ) Sneak’s era, but not him. Hmmmmmmm.”

Whoever Vaggio really are, they have 20 years worth of experience in the studio, and it’s reflected in their slick debut: two tracks of taut, bouncy, perfectly-paced and expertly mixed house music.

Reworks of First Choice’s disco anthem “Aint No Man Put Asunder” are hardly scarce, but Vaggio succeed in breathing new life into it with “Don’t You Want Some More,” cherry picking that track’s distinctive vocal sample and pairing it with a borrowed funk bassline. The track is unadulterated fun, and an exercise in less is more: all that’s needed are hi-hats, snares and an epic buildup or two to keep it rolling on, and the accompanying “Jazz Heavy” combines old and new, fusing a double bass loop and bebop piano with elastic acid tones.

This EP has been hitting the sweet spot for a range of house-related DJs, with Radio Slave, Soul Clap, Alex Niggemann, Pezzner, Luke Solomon and Tiefschwarz all showing their support, and Tongy has given the nod too, giving “Don’t You Want Some More” on airing on Radio 1 a fortnight ago. Pick it up on Beatport here.
