For being founded only in 2009 by Los Angeles deep-tech trio Droog, Culprit has one hell of a catalog under its belt. Releases from Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Adultnapper, Inxec, Matt Tolfrey and a number of other house heavy-hitters prove that the Droogs have the connections with all the right people—relationships they’ve built up over the years of hosting rooftop parties at the Standard Hotel.

Their new EP from Special Case, hailing from St. Petersberg and Moscow, shows that there’s a healthy scene developing in a corner of the world where the rooftop parties take place under onion domes.

Perfectly suited for the long lost days of a summer patio bash, “Aurum” leads off the release with a warm funky bass line groove and sloppy claps awash in just the right amount of reverb and a big fat kick that hits every other measure. Robert James‘ remix vacuums the sunshiny fun out of the original with a deeper, darker synth-heavy vibe better utilized during closing hours here in the US (or opening hours if you’re lucky enough to call Europe home). On the flip, “Round:About” is at a late-night pace, heavy kick, sleazy tops, and lazy bass groove will keep a dance floor locked through all hours of the night and Petre Inspirescu‘s remix of the same is a tech-tacular take on the original.
