Bomb Alert: Reboot’s Juana Molina remix

Maybe that should be alerta de bomba, but whatever, it’s a biggie: the Reboot remix of Juana Molina’s ‘Un Dia’ is finally available from the Domino label.

Reboot’s remix began as a bootleg, and thanks to repeated lashings from Ricardo Villalobos, Tiefschwarz and others, it became one of last summer’s most sought-after tunes, especially on Ibiza.

“We had people hitting our general email looking for it,” Domino’s Steve Savoca told Beatportal, but the label had no idea what they were talking about. It was Domino artist Four Tet who discovered a YouTube video featuring Villalobos playing the track out. “We knew right away it was Reboot,” said Savoca. (Good ears!)

Much to the label’s credit, instead of setting the lawyers on the case, they arranged for an official release of the 10-minute remix, which lays out Molina’s sing-song chants and acoustic guitars over a rolling groove that is, indeed, very Reboot.

It’s high time that someone remixed Juana Molina, frankly. She’s an Argentine singer, songwriter, and producer extraordinaire—and, originally, one of the country’s most famous comedians—known for lush, faintly psychedelic music incorporating acoustic instruments, digital edits, and voice. All four of her readily available records— ‘Segundo’, ‘Tres Cosas’, ‘Son’, and ‘Un Dia’— are well worth checking out; novices will probably want to start with 2008’s ‘Un Dia’, the fullest realization of her electro-acoustic brand of avant folk-pop.
