Body Pump

Simon "Bassline" Smith & Drumsound...

‘Body Pump’, to the rebellious young men at the back of the class, probably references sexual intercourse, and if they’re talking about an orgy they’re probably right because, quite literally speaking, when this track drops in a rave, the flailing, aggressive crowd really do resemble a sea of sweaty bodies grinding against one another.

Featuring Youngman - an MC sounding a bit like the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s dream - ‘Body Pump’ is the epitome of dance floor drum & bass, and is expertly produced.

It probably won’t be hailed as a classic in years to come, but here and now, it can do nothing but devastate raves with weighty sound systems.

‘Body Pump’ sounds like the product of a Dillinja number post-2002 and a Clipse track meshed together, with Simon “Bassline” Smith and Drumsound’s special touches.

It’s a thing of technical beauty, ‘Body Pump’—the technical Holy Grail that all drum & bass producers must unearth in order to be in with a chance of A) being successful and B) creating an anthem.

What part sounds like Dillinja?

The drums of course - a well oiled, unstoppable audio machine comprised of fearsome cogs and pistons.

The shuffle behind them is very well engineered, creating a skanky vibe that you just can’t help but dance to.

The lead synth is the Clipse-styled piece, which is a freaky, detuned combo of square waves, rolling out nonchalantly across the torturous soundscape that Simon and Drumsound have constructed.

Hearing the synth whilst dancing is like being lost in a dark, twisted, futuristic warzone, and then looking up upon hearing the sound of a potential salvage ship, only to see a horrid, metal monster coming to get you.

The bassline, comprised of a deep, pure sine wave, in combination with the killer drums, smashes things to pieces.

And finally, you have the vocal, shouting things like “OOH!”, and, “EVERYBODY PUMP!”, which works perfectly in the context of a dark room with loud music.

To be honest though, they sound a bit rough and ready.

But depending on your opinion, this could be a good thing, as ‘Body Pump’ adheres to the charismatic “bedroom” vibe that D&B feeds off to create anthems.
