Blood Sugar / Axel Grinder
Pendulum [Breakbeat Kaos]
7 August, 2007 | 3.33PM‘Blood Sugar’ is the standard Pendulum
affair – 200Hz-boosted kick/snare combos with LFO Reeces making out high-pitch melodies on top of deep sine waves and distorted mid-range basses.
It’s a nice catchy track but we can’t help feeling that we’ve heard this all before in Pendulum classics like ‘Another Planet’.
The bassline reminds us a bit of ‘Screamer’ by Ram Trilogy too – which can’t be a bad thing!
Whatever the case, ‘Blood Sugar’ works well in a rave, so if you’re a Pendulum freak this makes for essential listening, but for the more discerning, choosier DJ perhaps it’s best to wait for their next dub-plate.
‘Axel Grinder’ is some dirty shit.
The break that leads into its drop runs in a triplet formation; and drum & bass producers will know that Pendulum haven’t broken out this little production trick for some time.
As far as the drop goes – it has the brooding menace of Digital and Spirit’s ‘Phantom Force’; the maniacal repetition of Universal Project’s ‘Vessel’ and is wrapped up unmistakably in Pendulum’s perfect production.
Rookie producers avert your ears – the serrated audio barbs in ‘Axel Grinder’ are so sharp that they’ll make you want to give up.
