BLNRB: Welcome to the Madhouse feat. Jahcoozi, Modeselektor, Gebr. Teichmann + Nairobi’s finest

As much as dance producers invoke Africa as an inspiration, it’s often something of a one-way street. But Gebrüder Teichmann had something far more equitable in mind when they conceived of the BLNRB-NRBLN project, a cross-cultural exchange pairing musicians from Germany and Kenya.

In 2009 and 2010, with support from the Goethe Institut, Gebrüder Teichmann, Jahcoozi and Modeselektor traveled to Nairobi, where they met up with musicians from the local scene like Mister Abbas, Kimya, Lon’jon, Nazizi, Just A Band, and Michel Ongaro. All the artists shared a live/work space in a Nairobi townhouse dubbed “The Madhouse,” where they jammed, traded ideas, rehearsed and recorded. The exchange went the other way, as well, with the Nairobi contingent visiting Berlin in the dead of winter for a final collaborative performance.

Now, at last, the full fruits of the project are available to the public in the form of BLNRB: Welcome to the Madhouse, an 18-track collection of the tracks recorded in Nairobi. Dub, electro, dubstep, hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass, live percussion, breaks, rapping, call-and-response vocals and experimental vocalizing come together in an electrifying blast of fourth-world electronic music.

Check out the video documentary above, and learn more on the Goethe Institut’s BLNRB blog and the BLNRB Facebook page. Read on to check out tracks from the album.
