Black Beauty Remixes Pt. 1
Dapayk and Padberg [Mo's Ferry]
18 April, 2008 | 10.06AM- Section: Music Recommendations
‘Black Beauty’, an album devoted in large parts to lamenting the demise of vinyl, emerged as one of the minimal scene’s quirkier successes of 2007, and this pair of remixes bring a touch of dancefloor oomph to the proceedings.
That said, the irony of reviewing a remix release from a pro-vinyl protest LP on a well-known download site has been noted.
Regardless, it’s the quality of the music that counts, and both tracks here deliver that in plentiful supply.
Dapayk’s cranky hip-house rework of ‘Pantomime Horse’ is fun, with stuttering rhymes and clatter-house beats making the most of Dapayk’s penchant for wayward samples and propulsive glitchery.
It’s maybe a touch gimmicky for purist minimal heads, but those of us who take ourselves a little less seriously will find plenty to love.
Meanwhile, cyber-tribal king Guido Schneider’s sinister tautness takes ‘Theiss’ into murky, heads-down territory for da clubs.
Like all his best work, it’s low on the bongo count, but maintains just a flicker of ominous tension to keep things driving ahead.
Both are ideal for DJs hoping to breathe some new life into the album’s widely-played originals.
