Billy Says: in the bag! Audion’s elusive track

There’s no greater feeling of record geek satisfaction when you finally land that elusive record you’ve been chasing after.

Matthew Dear working under his Audion finally delivers ‘Billy Says Go’ — a tune that’s been haunting Beatportal’s Ben Raven, for let’s just say, a very long time

It first bowled me over in Berlin’s Bar 25 almost a year ago.

A wailing sampled voice murmurs hypnotically over trippy ‘heads down, dance them out’ beats.

And then just as the track reached a plateau, a ghostly riff freaked the club out onto a whole new level of disorientation.

For weeks afterwards its arresting, unsettling hook haunted my brain.

I tried to hum it to friends and failed, miserably!

I wasn’t the only one: “Come on you must know it, bam, baaaaam, baaaaam ba da ba ba bam bam,” my friend Kim said one afternoon. “ Nah it’s more like duh, duhhhh, buhh duu du dee duh duh,” I replied, “I’m sure it’s Matt Radioslave.”

“Isn’t it Matt John?” someone else piped in.

And so the debate continued for months on end, the frustration multiplying by the week.

Undeterred, it got so bad we even had to hum it to our DJ friends.

Annoyingly, it later turns out all of them had copies but sadly here’s no greater embarrassment than having to hum a tune to someone else when no matter how hard you try, you always end up sounding demented and getting nowhere near your objective of tracking down that elusive track.

And just this week, just as we’ given up all hope, it turned up on Beatport.

It was no surprise it’s a Matthew Dear track.

‘Billy Says Go’ written under his Audion guise has been doing the rounds in Matthew’s close circle of DJ friends for the best party of a year tripping out dancefloors everywhere.

Typically Matthew Dear, its another release of his that takes techno an extra step forward.

An exercise in dancefloor freakiness that’ll no doubt inspire a flock of soundalikes in the months to come.

But that’s neither here nor there.

Finally, it’s available to download.

Finally, it’s playing on my monitors at home, very, very, loud, over and over and over again.

Finally, there’s no more need to hum its demented melody or attract confused looks from DJ friends.

Finally, ‘Billy Says Go’!

Now if I can just figure out what that track is 37 minutes into the new Raresh liveset…
