Bilal: Levels, directed by Flying Lotus

Bilal’s new video gets the Midas touch from none other than West Coast king of electronic jazz himself, Flying Lotus, who makes his directorial debut on “Levels,” peppering it with cameos from Erykah Badu, bassist Thundercat, and the track’s producer, Shafiq Husayn.

The LA Times described the clip, with its shades of a space-age Jodorovsky, as an homage “to all things galactic and psychedelic"—also a fair assessment of FlyLo’s acclaimed 2010 album Cosmogramma, whose track “Mmmhmm” isn’t far off from the piano-led daydream states of “Bilal’s Levels.”

Originally from Philadelphia, the jazz musician Bilal’s collaborators range from Questlove to J Dilla to Dr. Dre; his new album, Airtight’s Revenge, was released on Plug Research last year.
