Big Brother’s Kate Lawler working to silence critics
20 March, 2007 | 5.08PMAs the former winner of British reality TV series Big Brother, Kate Lawler’s move into DJing was always going to be fraught with criticism and ridicule.
Dance music is full of cynics and the British love hate mentality towards celebrities has seen Lawler in particular receive a mountain of criticism.
But Manchester’s top club Sankey’s (formerly Sankey’s Soap), known for its cutting-edge musical policy and high quality DJs, has installed Kate Lawler
as resident.
Clearly the girl must have some talent, as Sankey’s owner David Vincent claimed: “Sankey’s brings out the best in DJs and this is the case with Kate, who is blossoming into a resident the club can be proud of.”
It isn’t just Sankey’s who think Kate Lawler is a good DJ.
She has also played at The Cross, Pacha, and The Egg in London, as well as Privilege and Eden in Ibiza.
Kate Lawler is slowly winning over her critics, or at least forcing them to eat their words.
“People have this pre-conception that my music collection consists of commercial pop, r&b and party anthems,” said Kate, who currently spins a mixture of house and techno.
“It gets on my tits that some people don’t take me seriously because of Big Brother.
“But I love to surprise people with the music I play and I always get positive feedback.”
Ministry of Sound’s resident DJ and prolific producer Mark Knight has tipped Kate for big things.
“In my opinion, Kate Lawler is on the way to becoming the biggest female DJ in the country,” he said.
“She has passion, musical credibility and understanding of how to rock a party, she is my tip for the top.
“Go to one of her gigs and draw you own opinion.”
Whether the lass can win over Britain’s pessimistic clubbers remains to be seen.
