Better Change
Better Change
Tony Lionni [mule electronic]
24 April, 2008 | 6.10AMDoes anyone else feel that there’s too much tedious deep house being released?
Without sounding too cynical, every second former minimal producer is now trying his or her hand at going deep.
Unfortunately, most of it sounds like a bland Xerox of the style of house that labels like Pagan, Guidance and Paper were putting out exactly ten years ago.
However, there are some exceptions, and Tony Lionni’s experience and history shine through his spine-tingling grooves.
A former DJ on the early 1990s Manchester scene — he was a regular face on the floor and behind the decks of Dry Bar and Club South —Tony Lionni
knows exactly what he’s doing.
The title track is reminiscent of classic US house, featuring sweet piano lines, a soulful vocal snippet and a repetitive sax sample, but it’s based on clicking, reduced beats that give it a contemporary flavour.
‘The Presence’ sees Lionni go for a moodier sound: a dark bass snakes its way over shaking percussion and spacey, eerie synths billow to the fore.
The last track, ‘Racies’ is a useful, key-changing techy workout, but it’s overshadowed by the preceding towers of light and dark shining through the mushy deep house fog that surround them.
