Berlin review: Panorama/Berghain third birthday
Berlin review: Panorama/Berghain third birthday
19 December, 2007 | 9.50AMIt’s one AM on a Saturday night in Berlin, and already the queue for Berghain is all the way down a hundred metres of muddy, disco freak packed pathway into the car park.
Normally the crowds don’t get here until at least three (and that’s still considered an early time to go by the regulars), but for the club’s third birthday, no one is taking any chances.
Twelve hours later and the dancefloor is still packed.
On the main room floor, Ryan Elliott’s set is the talk of the harder crowd.
For the minimalists and house lovers, the main event takes place in the venue’s club within a club, the Panorama Bar.
Konrad Black
blasted the crowds for the opening four hours, Matthew Dear
followed for another stint, slapping the wall of the DJ booth as the party kept kicking up a gear.
The killer set of the day, though, was a back-to-back session from Loco Dice and the excellent Panorama resident, Cassy.
From the vocals lacing the house records like Robert Owen’s vocal bootlegged from Harry Romero’s ‘I Go Back’, to the big end of set killers like the extended mix of Basement Jaxx’s ‘Fly Life’, current club biggies like Johnny D’s ‘Gualia’ or oldies such as Green Velvet’s ‘The Stalker’, their set was about as turbo charged as its possible for underground house and techno to get.
Moodmusic boss Sasse followed with a more melodic approach, kicking off with Smith N Hack’s ‘Space Warrior’ and ended with the last half hour of old skool house that sent the crowds going crazy.
If you’ve still not been to Berghain, then check out their label, Ostgut Ton — the imprint that’s quickly gaining a reputation for releasing some of Berlin’s best underground music.
