Berlin review: Groove Magazine @ Watergate, Nov 28th

There are parties, there are other parties and then there are PARTIES.

Yes that’s PARTIES, full caps, full metal raving jacket style and here in Berlin the Groove Magazine annual Christmas knees up usually falls into this category.

Berlin’s magazine nexus for all that’s forward thinking and great in dance music knows a thing or two about picking lineups and last year’s smash up at Panorama Bar pulled in heavyweight players like Luciano [a] and Ricardo Villalobos [a].

This year, the Groove guys dispensed with the generals for a new raft of big players.

Dixon, captured Berlin’s recent house resurgence perfectly on the main floor, rocking slabs of old skool style 4/4 beats alongside big room stuff like his remix of Roísín Murphy’s ‘Overpowered.’

Downstairs another Berlin favourite Efdemin, turned in a surprisingly tougher set of techno before one of France’s leading underground DJs (and this month’s coverstar on Groove) Chloé hooked up her Serato Scratch and leveled the ground floor with electro tinged techno.

The party had been pretty lack luster til this point but once Chloe took charge and was followed by Troy Pierce, Watergate properly kicked off.

Tunes of the night? Heckmann’s ‘Silverscreen’ , the Cassy remix of Prosumer and Murat T’s ‘Turn Around’ and a succession of Johnny D tracks.

If you haven’t checked out Johnny D [a] then listen to his tracks in the player below. Get involved.

Berlin is hammering the A-side of his latest release ‘Walkman’ but in my opinion the instrumental B side Déjà vu is much better and a future classic.

And you can still hear DJs hammering all three tracks from his earlier release ‘Gualia’ which includes the party starting ‘Manipulation’ and the deeper but nonetheless excellent ‘Katalpa.’

But as good as the Groove Magazine party was, it wasn’t the epic that previous years had promised.

Perhaps it was the omission of a real must see DJ, or perhaps it was absence of the crazy vibe that only the Panorama Bar can provide but it wasn’t a patch on the previous two year’s Groove parties.
