5 February, 2008 | 1.49PMIn the screaming mass of new artists adding to the minimal sound every month, it can be a daunting task trying to spot those who shout loudest in the crowd.
The answer to achieving this is simple.
Make melodies and contribute ideas that are simply stronger than everyone else.
Newcomers Playground Group’s ear catching release on underground stalwart Dave Ellesmere’s new label does exactly that largely thanks to the melodic second track on the EP, ‘Paradox.’
The track strings out an emotive melody over jumpy percussion and creates an inspiring dancefloor moment for those floors favoured by minimal house speciallists like Steve Bug or Matthias Tanzmann.
The other two track, ‘Bell Bell’ are pretty standard fare minimal techno club jumpers.
The eerie bell hook of ‘Bell Bell’ is creepy enough to make it a safe option for most minimalists to play, even if it doesn’t stand out as much as ‘Paradox.’
‘Let Me In’ is strikes an altogether deeper vein of house with no great hook to speak of but bags of stylish moodiness and funk to carry it through.
Playground Group are two new producers from Poland Dominik Jarmocik and ‘Vi-tek’ Marcin Wiencis who’ve come through the ranks DJing in local clubs, and through Polish internet radio and we look forward to hearing their next release if its anything as polished as this.
