, comprising of members Marbert and Rocel (funny that) are the latest additions to the ever-eclectic German label Compost
.
‘Beats Like Birds’ has drawn comparisons with the great Matthew Herbert, circa ‘Bodily Functions’ era, and with the addition the Marbert Rocel debut LP, ‘Speed Emotions’, just released, more comparisons are sure to be drawn.
The title track feels like deep House from fresh point of view.
Whether or not the duo wish to align themselves in any way with the genre remains to be seen, but what we have here is a full 5+ minutes of slinky, tripped-out bliss.
Groove-wise, it’s the rhythmic equivalent of ants in your pants, with the bit-crushed percussion fidgeting uncomfortably atop a deep, dubby bassline.
The sticky, female vocal is more than a bit sexy, perfectly suiting the musical mood surrounding it.
Douglas Greed’s version feels more like a re-touch than a remix, with the drums and some eerie FX the only notable differences from the Original.
The oddly titled ‘Tttictictac’ whips out its acoustic guitar for a cordial, bedtime sing-a-long.
The female voice is joined by a male counterpart, which only enhances a thoroughly pleasant little number further.
Heads up for the album then, which is shaping up to be an interesting listen for sure.
