Beatport’s Fourth Birthday at Watergate, Berlin
1 February, 2008 | 7.02AM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog, Berlin
You weren’t at Watergate for our fourth birthday party? Well what we can we say, joined by a cast of killer DJs, we had fun in your honour.
Yes it was Beatport’s fourth birthday on Wednesday night and yes we could probably have cried if we wanted to but the only emotional outburst taking place in Berlin’s most cutting edge club was full throttle raving.
A killer cast of current innovating dance music artists gathered to provide the music. Modeselektor and Adam Beyer both tore the main floor to pieces, showcasing their respective Djing skills to a white knuckled crowd holding onto sanity by their fingertips.
Cutting ‘Spastik’ into tearing booty bass while thrashing crescendo after white noise crescendo from the effects unit, provided the kick of the night for the electro fan’s thanks to Modeselektor while downstairs Holland’s finest provided the pick of the house music.
And lashings of it was laid on. Raving hard and keeping the bar in business were off duty DJs like Shinedoe, Heidi or Dirt Crew as first Dave Ellesmere, Rejected (Jooris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal), then 2000andOne provided the highlight sets of the night.
Early birds caught a rare Berlin set from dubstep maverick Skream who took advantage of one of the world’s best sound systems to throw down layer after layer of experimental bass music to a crowd who lapped it up.
Tunes of the night? They were being relentlessly thrashed it was hard to keep the pace and jam them into my mobile phone’s ‘reminders’ folder but this scribe’s favourites included a new cut from Kabale Und Lieke called ‘Mekeke’ (not out until May sadly) amongst a plethora of heavy hitting house records.
Haven’t got copies of the Radioslave mix of Len Faki’s ‘My Black Sheep’, Format B’s ‘Bad Beat’ [check it in the player below], Rejected ‘Lets GO Juno’?
Then fix up and get a flavour for one of the best parties Berlin has seen this year so far.
