Beatportal’s live NAMM blog

This month, we’re going to be bringing the Beatport community inside one of the most exclusive tradeshows in our industry.

The NAMM Show.

Never heard of it? That’s okay. A lot of NAMM attendees have never heard of Pacha and that’s fine too.

Let’s put it this way.

The NAMM Show is as big as Winter Music Conference, Sonar, or the Amsterdam Dance Event – and in certain ways, it’s equally important to our community.

How big is big?

Well, last year, the attendance numbers hovered around 80,000 people.

That’s 80,000 people for an event that’s not even open to the public.

About NAMM

So what the heck is The NAMM Show anyway?

The NAMM Show is the largest music products trade show in the United States.

Held every January in Anaheim, California, NAMM brings together every aspect of the music and recording products industries.

NAMM is an event where manufacturers from Ableton to Yamaha debut and demonstrate their latest technologies to industry insiders ranging from retailers to reviewers.

Synthesizers, software, DJ gear, recording equipment, monitors, microphones, and every imaginable electric and acoustic instrument available today — if it makes beautiful noise, it will be on the show floor.

The NAMM show is extraordinary for other reasons, also.

It’s not just manufacturers and retailers. It’s also legendary artists and producers, testing and tinkering with this year’s crop of musical tools, right there on the show floor.

Last year, I saw Thomas Bangalter at the Ableton booth — in civilian clothes, mind you — test-driving the latest version of Live. Then I wandered off to look at exotic analog synthesizers with Josh Gabriel.

It’s like that.

Beatportal: On The Frontline of NAMM

From January 17th to January 20th, we’ll be right there in the midst of the NAMM madness, checking out the latest widgets and wünder-apps for electronic musicians, DJs, and producers.

Each day and evening, there will be blog updates live and direct from the NAMM trade show floor filling you in on the most exciting gizmos on show, along with photos and links and maybe even a celebrity interview spot or two.

In the next two weeks leading up to the show, we’ll also be posting a bit of speculation and gossip as to what’s on the horizon for the music tech industry.

And we want to hear from you too.

In the comments section for this posting, please let us know what type of instruments and tools you’re drooling over.

Wherever possible, we’ll follow up directly on as many requests as time permits.

How’s that for service?

So stay tuned… After all, these are the tools that will be making the music that will form our soundtrack for 2008.
