label manager Paul Rose, aka Scuba
, talks to Beatportal about his exciting new album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy’, his massive new dubstep night in Berlin, and his fantasy football squad.
Kmag recently described your album as a ‘52 minute journey into glitchy, Detroit-flavoured dubstep noir’. How accurate is this description?
That’s one way of looking at it, I guess.
It’s definitely more Detroit than Berlin.
Hotflush seems to be going from strength to strength with killer releases recently from Jazzsteppa and 2562. Would you say the concept behind the label is evolving and if so, where do you see the label going within the next few years?
I want the label to carry on what it’s done from the start, which is to release good music without getting stuck in pigeonholes or subgenres, or any of the other things people make up to stop you from being creative.
Don’t ask me to be any more specific than that, though, please.
Rumour has it you’re behind one of the biggest dubstep parties in Western Europe, at Berlin’s so-called “techno mecca” club, Berghain. Can you elaborate, and tell us why you picked this location over all others to start this new night?
Well, Berlin is long overdue a proper big dubstep night, and the best venue with the best sound system in the city by a mile is Berghain so we figured it’s got to be there.
It wasn’t straightforward, though.
This is the first time there’s been anything other than techno in the Berghain room at Panorama Bar on a Friday night.
But everyone at the venue has been really supportive and totally into the idea so it’s definitely happening on Friday 11th July.
I’m incredibly excited about it, it’s such a massive opportunity being able to do it there.
And you can get all the info on Substance Club’s MySpace page
You recently did a US tour. How is your style of techno-influenced-dubstep received by the American crowd in comparison to that of European audiences?
You always get a few people who are confused by the comparative lack of wobbly basslines.
Sometimes you feel like you have to throw them something as a reward for sticking with you through the more “out there” stuff.
I remember reading an interview with Derrick Carter years ago and he was talking about using disco tracks in the same sort of way, like every 4 or 5 tunes he’d chuck one in and everyone would go nuts.
You can’t do it every tune, though—it loses the impact.
Finally, you had a tough year previously supporting Arsenal. Do you have any other musician colleagues involved in supporting premier league sides, and do you have a fantasy league squad?
My fantasy team was pretty damn good this year!
I was in the top 300 for a while but couldn’t sustain it, ended up finishing about 3,000th out of 1.7 million, which isn’t too bad.
When I’m bored in the studio I get hold of Martyn on AIM.
He’s a massive PSV Eindhoven fan, I’ve spent far too long talking to that guy about football.
Anyway, Arsenal weren’t that bad this season, everyone was expecting us to finish behind Spurs.
Thanks, Scuba. We eagerly anticipate the new offerings from Hotflush, and the biggest dubstep party to hit Berlin.
