Beatportal Interviews Dieselboy from Human Imprint

Dieselboy [a] is best known for being the leading producer and DJ in US drum & bass.

Heading up the Human Imprint [l] label, and recently releasing the Substance D mix, Dieselboy talks to Beatportal about US drum & bass and his plans for the future.

You’ve been labeled as one of the founding fathers of American drum & bass, which is a big achievement. How does that make you feel?

Old! Just kiddin’.

It feels good to know that I’ve put my stamp on a scene that I have been so passionate about since 1992.

It feels good to know that being positive has helped me get to where I am today.

How do you feel the US scene compares to that of the UK?

A little more open-minded musically.

The UK scene is predominantly jump up and the American scene can handle more of a mix of styles, size-wise.

It is comparable depending on the cities you are in.

Human Imprint put out ‘Ladies Night’ last year, and it was massive, and pretty much still is. Were you expecting such a huge uptake of this release?

It kinda took me by surprise.

When Demo and Cease originally sent me the track they said they did it as a joke!

When I started giving it out to other DJs the feedback was off the charts.

It was amazing how people responded to it.

The recent track, Midnight Express with Evol Intent, is a hybrid of house, techno and hard-edged drum & bass. Is this a style you are currently progressing towards?

I feel like my style is always pretty across-the-board, though people know me mainly for the hard stuff I play.

I do enjoy the new techno-influenced drum & bass that is starting to come out now.

For ‘Midnight Express’ we wanted to take that hard techno sound but give it a nice, dancefloor kinda vibe.

How do you think the drum & bass scene is evolving, and ultimately where do you see yourself in regards to it?

People are still pulling in different influences and changing the music.

The harder stuff has gotten harder, the soulful stuff...funkier.

I hope to continue to be someone that helps push and promote the music to a wider audience.

I want to help push and promote new artists with my label.

I want to continue to embrace my role as an ambassador of the American drum & bass scene when I play internationally.
