Beatportal Interviews 2562
7 July, 2008 | 2.50AM2562 is representing a new sound, fusing dubstep and techno which branches out to an audience that like to blur the boundaries of what is deep and moody.
Coming straight out of Holland, 2562 has taken his favourite elements of Detroit techno and implemented in his non-generic 4/4 rhythmical dubstep style.
If you’re not already familiar with his unique style then you need to look no further than ‘Kameleon’, whose percussive driving beats entwine with reverberating basslines to create a haunting atmosphere. Take out the dubstep rhythm and you wouldn’t be judged in thinking that this was some of the deepest techno.
Releasing on genre leader, Pinch’s Tectonic, based in Bristol, 2562 has released his debut album ‘Aerial’.
The album, as he described on Pitchforkmedia is ‘Detroit techno, Basic Channel, and 1998-2002 broken beat’.
Beatportal caught up with 2562 and managed to drop in a few questions about the new album, the dubstep scene and his secret love for R&B.
Your new album ‘Aerial’ is being released through Pinch’s Bristol- based label Tectonic. What’s your relationship with Pinch and why did you decide to release your album through this label?
Tectonic was the first label I sent a demo to after Appleblim, who I’d sent some tracks before, had told me about Pinch being into deep techno.
Luckily I didn’t have to look further, he was really into Channel Two and put it out as my first 12” on Tectonic.
We spoke about the possibility of doing an album early on and I just kept writing new material until the time was right, it was quite a natural process.
The dubstep scene is already being categorised into sub-genres by it’s audience, including ‘jump-up’, ‘dubstepno’ and ‘breakstep’. What are your thoughts on this, and where do you think your music fits in – if at all?
I really don’t think the world needs more sub-genres, categorizing is always about dividing and fitting things into formulas, which is exactly what I try to avoid.
What has pleased me most about the recent feedback on my releases is that it doesn’t come from one particular scene or category.
You also produce under your alter ego Dogdaze. What’s the difference between Dogdaze and 2562, and what does the future entail for this other persona?
Dogdaze was my project for mainly sample-based offbeat and hip-hop kinda stuff, but it’s actually defunct since I dropped my self-released album In Dog We Trust, late 2006.
I wanted to focus on 2562 as well as my techno-not-techno project A Made Up Sound.
What records are really working for you at the moment, and who’s really inspiring you musically?
I greatly enjoy playing out tracks by the likes of Martyn,Peveralist, Pinch, Mala, Kode 9, Headhunter and TRG.
Then the ‘Flying Lotus’ album is one of my favourite releases of the year so far.
And I’m a big fan of Shed, who put out some of my A Made Up Sound tracks on Soloaction / Subsolo.
The way I see it, he’s one of the few people who still make proper techno ass-kicking and soulful at the same time.
Musical inspirations over the years have been, among others, Anthony Shake Shakir, Metalheadz, Delsin Records, Basic Channel / Hardwax and Dego from 4Hero.
The production elements behind your releases are very similar to that of fellow Dutchman, Martyn. Do you think there are common elements within your home country that have inspired you both, or are there other factors behind this style of low-fi, deep dubstep?
I’m not sure if being Dutch plays a role, it’s more likely caused by sharing musical preferences.
Although maybe Holland’s on and off history of underground techno is a factor here… me and Martyn have both been fans of quality techno since long and with shops like Clone and Rush Hour around it’s always been fairly easy to get hold of the good stuff the past 10+ years.
It’s been said that you are a secret fan of 80’s R&B. Is this something that you would be interested in exploring musically at any point? If not, where do you believe your productions will take you?
Haha, I named that in an interview when I was asked for a guilty pleasure, but it’s not like I listen to it everyday.
To be honest, I don’t have a clue where I’m heading now the album’s done and that’s ok.
I have a feeling the ‘A Made Up Sound’ project will make a comeback though; plus there’s a few new 2562 dubs on the go. I can never dwell on the same thing too long, so I will probably be moving away from the sound of my recent output.
And finally, do you think the Netherlands stand a chance in this year’s European Cup?
Usually most Dutch are convinced ‘we’ do have a serious chance to win tournaments and it doesn’t happen. So best keep a low profile this time and maybe we’ll be surprised :-)
Many thanks.
