Beatport Live presents Joel Alter
1 February, 2012 | 1.00PMDiving headfirst into a brilliant set of house and disco, from timeless classics to new material, we were honored to have Joel Alter behind the decks for last week’s Beatport Live broadcast. Introducing us to some funky, deep and elegant dance tracks on a Wednesday afternoon, he helped make “hump day” that much more bearable.
We followed up with him to bring you the post-stream wrap up; you can check out that interview below, as well as the video archive of his set. Enjoy!
Thanks for stopping by Beatport to play for us! What’s it like to play in the Beatport booth? Do you do many live Internet broadcasts like this?
Well, first of all, you rarely play on Technics this fresh and clean these days. Awesome. I did this once before and it’s kinda fun, you don’t really have to be scared of emptying the dancefloor…
Could you tell us a little about your track selection today?
There are a couple of classics that I always play, like the stuff from Dinky and this track from Moodymann that starts the show. I like to build back and forth and keep the tension that way. Ending the set with the epic “Look Of Love” fram ABC is just as natural for me. I was brought up on that ‘80s funky stuff.
What’s your typical DJ setup like?
I like to use CDJs; that gives me a good way of playing a lot of my own unreleased stuff, which I do a lot, and of course turntables. I always bring a bunch of vinyl from my collection--it could be disco, techno, house or funk. Just a couple of wildcards. I’m not one of those guys who record my vinyl collection digitally, it stays the way it was meant to be…
Did you play any unreleased material that we should be keeping an eye out for?
Yes, I tried a couple of new tracks. I just finished two 12"s together with Savas Pascalidis that will come out this spring on Sweatshop. I guess that’s called techno. Jonsson/Alter will release a remix 12” on Kontra-Musik and then yet another 12”. Then I’m working on an album as well and figuring out which label might suit me well for this…
For listeners who want to check you out in person, could you tell us about any residencies you may have, and where you’ll be touring next?
Right now is studio time, but I’ll be heading for Stockholm in beginning of March with Jonsson/Alter and then Paris and Rex Club in the middle of April.
