Beatport Live presents DJ Hero

Beatport Live presents DJ Hero

This month’s appearance from DJ Hero on Beatport Live might have been the first time we featured a representative from the breaks genre. With that, Hero came in and shamed us for our neglect with a set that featured original bootlegs along side a dog named Samantha.

We followed up with him to bring you the post-stream wrap up; you can check out that interview below, as well as the video archive of his set.

Thanks for stopping by Beatport to play for us! What’s it like to play in the Beatport booth? Do you do many live Internet broadcasts like this?

I would have to say it’s a little nerve racking because, in a club the lights are down, and the crowd is hyped up on the large sound and the ambience of the show. In the Beatport booth, it’s an office, people are working, and there are cameras capturing you every move. Regardless though, it’s a lot of fun. To be in an environment like that is kind of a refreshing change. I do a weekly broadcast on www.party95.com out of Orlando, FL. I enjoy the radio show because it allows to me take more of a trip with the music, rather than simply playing the bangers I might play in the club.

Could you tell us a little about your track selection today?

I played primarily bootleg remixes I’ve done of popular house tracks, mixed in with a few original tracks. Breaks don’t tend to be the popular selection, for me, the house remixes bridge the gap to the majority of EDM fans. They are a way to bring them over to another genre of music that they may enjoy just as much.

What’s your typical DJ setup like? Do you play with Traktor, Serato, Ableton, CDJs, or something else?
My typical DJ set up is Serato. If I’m in the studio I use it in conjunction with the old standby, the technic 1200. But with the 1200 being less and less present in the clubs and parties, I’ve set up Serato to be used completely internal, using the laptop’s keyboard as my MIDI controller programming the necessary controls to hot keys and shortcuts.

Did you play any unreleased material that we should be keeping an eye out for?

I opened my set with an original that is currently (February 10th, 2012) sitting at number 4 on the Beatport top 100 Breaks chart, B-boy Hustle (Original Mix). I followed that with an upcoming release which features Sue Cho, Sporty-O, DJ Fixx, and myself. The 8th track in the mix, “The Funk Motivator (Original Mix)” will be featured on the Stanton Warriors forth coming, Stanton Session 4. And, tracks 11 and 12 are “Picante Bajo (Original Mix)”, and “Kickin’ It (Original Mix)”. Those are set to be released in March for the Winter Music Conference. Though one of them may be released on an upcoming Baby Anne compilation.

For listeners who want to check you out in person, could you tell us about any residencies you may have, and where you’ll be touring next?

February 16th: Sutra Lounge, Denver, CO

March 2nd: SuperXero, Saint Louis, MO

March 16th: Road To Miami 2, Orlando, FL

March 23rd: The Winter Music Conference, Miami, FL

Listeners can also check out my weekly radio show on www.party95.com which airs every Saturday at 7pm eastern standard time.

I’ve always got fun downloads on my Soundcloud page, or Facebook and on twitter listeners can follow my randomness @originaldjhero. Lastly there’s my website, www.theoriginaldjhero.com.
