Beatport Live presents Bloody Mary
25 November, 2011 | 3.23AMBeatport staffers working late in our Berlin offices this past Wednesday may well have noticed a significant rise in the temperature; that was all thanks to Bloody Mary, who graced us with one of the sultriest DJ sets we’ve heard in a while.
Mary—France’s Marjorie Migliaccio, now based in Berlin—runs Dame Music, home to dusky deep house and techno from the likes of Argenis Brito, Quenum, Jay Haze and Serra Sam. Her set yesterday brought together favorites from the Dame Music catalog with Chicago house classics, clever R&B edits, and other seductive gems, all mixed with incredible panache. Read on to check out the archived audio and video, read an interview with the grande dame of groove herself, and check out her Beatport Top 10 featuring highlights from the set.
Thanks for stopping by Beatport to play for us! What’s it like to play in the Beatport booth, and have you done other live Internet mixes like this?
Thanks for inviting me it was a pleasure to play for Beatport. It’s the first time I have played live on the internet and I loved it. A fantastic experience and I great new way to share my music with the people.
Could you tell us a little about your track selection today? How did you pick out tracks for the mix, and what tunes are you particularly feeling right now?
The mix is a blend of what really moves me at the moment—old-school acid, new indie and tech-house. Podcast, club or Ustream set, the first track is the most important. It has to not only be appropriate for the setting but grab the audience’s attention and get them dancing. That’s why I started with a breakbeat track, Timid Boy’s ”Bandits and Dangerous Animals, (Cesare vs Disorder Introspective Edit)” (Dame-Music 006). It’s slow and sensual, giving the listeners a taste of the sexy mix to come.
Are there any upfront, unreleased tracks you played that we should be keeping our eyes open for?
YES of course! My new track “Hide and Seek feat. Eyke” coming out on my imprint Dame-Music on the 2nd of December. Keep your eyes and ears open for the video clip “Fading Away,” released at the same time. Also “This Place” by Subb-an<?a> and “What’s My Name Again” by Attan.
What’s your DJ setup like?
I mostly play with Traktor vinyl but I also use vinyl too. Habits I guess; I love the feel and performance of using the turntables. For me as a DJ it’s a really important element.
For listeners who want to check you out in person, could you tell us about any club residencies you may have, and where you’ll be touring next?
I’ve got a busy month ahead playing locally in Germany, then off to Italy and the UK. You can also catch me at the BPM Festival in Playa del Camen after the New Year. I will be on tour in Mexico for two weeks. Come and check out the gigs, I would love to share my music and party with you!
