Q&A with Olav Basoski
:
Q: With the success of recent releases coming from your hands it almost looks like you’re becoming a resident at the Beatport top 10’s. You must be enjoying the success?
A: Of course. Although ‘enjoying success’ like this usually means keep doing what you do now. And that is something I really enjoy, I love doing what I do now and to be able to continue that is a reward in itself. The biggest reward is to see what happens when I play my own tracks out, see how people respond to it. That is just phenomenal!
Q: While you see the so called ‘bigroom’ sound becoming very popular at the moment, you seem to swim upstream and being very successful with your disco house sound. What’s your secret?
A: No secret, other than that I’ve always tried to push my tracks in the big room direction despite the disco-y feel. It’s gotta rock, you know. Maybe that’s what attracts people, the sunshiny vibe combined with pretty tough beats and all.
Q: The legendary Samplitude series from your hands is now available for the first time ever digitally. Why you waited so long to make them available for the digital era?
A: I didn’t want them to drown in the sea of music that came available when all labels went digital. All these tracks mean a lot to me and marked a special time in my life, so now that the disco sound is back I thought the moment was right to re-release them.
Q: The Samplitude series contains 40 tracks, divided over 10 e.p’s. Any good memories on certain tracks?
A: I literaly remember the moment of every single one of them. Some of them were easier to do than others, of some of them I remeber the first time I tried them out on a crowd. I remember playing certain tracks to Armin van Buuren at the time, getting feedback of him. Good times.
Q: The series played an important factor in your career. How important was it and how did you came up with the idea for this series?
A: I was very much inspired by what Armand van Helden and Dave Angel
were doing at the time; doing crazy stuff with samples. How important was it? Very. It more or less set the vibe for me, I had been in the game for years already but with this I really found something that fitted me and that really seemed to go skyhigh.
Q: You seem to be very busy remixing, what can we expect to hit the streets any time soon?
A: I’ve just remixed a Nicole Scherzinger single Don’t Hold Your Breath. Also a classic from the late nineties, Wisdome.
I remixed the new Bingoplayers single and a Niels van Gogh. It’s been pretty crazy lately with remixes but I’ve put a hold on that for now. First my own new tracks. One with D. Ramirez is in the making!
The samplitude series are out now on beatport.com on Dirty Soul
Recordings.
