Be Tougher / Letters
Reboot [Cadenza]
7 April, 2008 | 3.04PM- Section: Music Recommendations
Another Cadenza key player emerges.
Reboot first caught this reviewer’s ears with the excellent single ‘Charlotte’ in 2007.
Its emotive melodies and futuristic sounds made it one of the year’s most standout and underrated releases.
Now the Frankfurt based producer (aka Frank Heinrich) returns with an EP on Cadenza.
Neither ‘Be Tougher’ nor ‘Letters’ are as immediate as ‘Charlotte’.
In fact, on first listen, both form a cacophony of percussion and sound effects that could render this release largely ignored if it wasn’t for the calibre of the label putting it out.
But dig deep and let it simmer on your brain, and two tracks of out-there space funk emerge.
‘Letters’ is our favourite, mixing distant African vocal samples with a breakdown that’s built around big foreboding pads and synths before launching into an enveloping tide of percussion.
Its heady, trippy electronica is best suited for the early morning vibes of dancefloors at Panorama or Fabric for those lost-in-the-music-8am moments.
