Bass Kleph’s North American Tour Diary - Part 2
Bass Kleph’s North American Tour Diary - Part 2
7 September, 2010 | 5.00AMWhen Australia’s Bass Kleph
volunteered to write a tour diary for Beatportal, we jumped at the chance. Read on for his North American hijinks! If you’re in the U.S., you can catch him in El Paso tomorrow, Miami on Friday, August 27, and St. Johns, Newfoundland, on Saturday August 28.
Last weekend was amazing! Talk about a great way to kick off this tour. The highlight being the epic Saturday night gig in LA (check out the video here. The next show wasn’t for another four days, so I stayed in LA for the rest of the week. I had remixes to finish for Stealth
, Taste/d, and colabs with Filthy Rich
, Joan Reyes
and more, so I spent most of my time in the hotel on the laptop.
By the way I highly recommend the Bose QC15 headphones for working on the road. One of the best things I ever bought. It wasn’t all work though. I did get out to the Dim Mak
night on the rooftop of the W Hotel for a few medicinal cocktails with the Love Festival promoters, plus I also had a chance to catch up with Sam Sparro and have a good chat about music and upcoming projects.
DAY 4
They say everything is bigger in Texas (the coffee definitely is...check out the pic)—unfortunately this didn’t ring true for the size of the crowd that night in El Paso. Having said that, I was massively spoilt with the last show in LA. The El Paso venue, Vault, was very cool, it’s an old theatre that is currently being renovated by the new owners. It’s going to be wicked when all finished.
El Paso is a border town to Juarez, so I had to try some Mexican food. It’s been a theme of the trip actually. Not much Mexican in Australia, so I’ve been getting amongst it.
All the crew were great at Vault, and despite the lack of a packed club, we still had a great time. Biggest track of the night was Bump DJ’s ‘Falcone’ (Bass Kleph Remix). I also had a chance to test out my new remix for Taste/d: for a track that was done entirely on headphones it turned out sounding quite “tasty” if I do say so myself.
DAY 5
A few hours sleep, and two flights later I was in one of my favourite places in America: Miami. Miami is hot—hot temperature, hot people and hot clubs, and the show at Cameo was no exception.
I’ve never had a shower with view before, but I think i could get used to the way they do things at the hotel in Miami. After freshening up, I grabbed some amaaazing sushi at Doraku Sushi (highly recommend), then hit the club.
Cameo is a beautiful club. Split level, great lights, great sound, stage dancers, pole dancers, and bottle service. What more could you want? Maybe some tech house? They got it! The music was rocking when i got in, even when the warm up DJ accidentally played my remix of ‘Shakedown’ before my set!
Cameo was awesome, had a great time. Biggest track of the night was Black Raw’s ‘Circo Nero’ (Daddy’s Groove Re-edit). I’ve been playing this for a while now, and it just rocks it everywhere. Next Stop, Canada!
DAY 6
The last show of the tour is always strangely sad and exciting at the same time. I wouldn’t know just how exciting until after though.
I was up for an early flight and on my way to St Johns, Newfoundland, it’s on the East most point of Canada. Actually if you were to trace my path for the tour you would see a big smiley face. That might be some kind of a sign, as this last show was mental!
It started off the way all good shows do, with sushi - but amaaazing sushi! Luke and Chris from Club V took me to this wicked spot called Basho, apparently the sushi chef there was trained under the guy from Nobu, not bad. Needless to say, the food was off the hook. As Chris Arnott (Bass Kleph’s sometimes co-writer/ vocalist) would say, “The hook was not even in the room” or “ICGF” for those in the know.
We arrived at the venue full and happy, only to find that the turnout was, well, not there. Luke assured me that people just turn up late there, but that’s what every promoter always says. Luke didn’t need to make excuses though, by the time I was due behind the decks, the club was rammed and jumping! The vibe in the room was pure energy and excitement. Everyone was going bananas, it was literally hands in the air, all night.
St Johns, you guys rock! This was definitely one of, if not my favourite show on the tour. Biggest track of the night was ‘Hey Ya’ without a doubt! Although my new remix for Stealth
went down a treat too.
All good things must come to an end though, or at least, just until the next time. For now though I’m heading back to Australia to tour for September. Then I’m back to UK/Europe to tour for October, and finish at ADE in Amsterdam. I love this job!
