Bass Kleph’s North American Tour Diary - Part 1
Bass Kleph’s North American Tour Diary - Part 1
25 August, 2010 | 1.56AMWhen Australia’s Bass Kleph
volunteered to write a tour diary for Beatportal, we jumped at the chance. Read on for his North American hijinks! If you’re in the U.S., you can catch him in El Paso tomorrow, Miami on Friday, August 27, and St. Johns, Newfoundland, on Saturday August 28. Check out his website for full details.
August has been a pretty insane month for me. Beatport announced that I’d had their biggest selling track so far this year (my remix of Joan Reyes’ ‘Shakedown’) just as I landed in the UK for a short tour and a lot of meetings. Which turned into a hell of a lot more meetings after the announcement—publishers, labels, a great collaboration session with Filthy Rich at the Premises Studio in Hackney, as well as gigs in London and Leeds (check out the video).
I returned to Sydney for just one week, played a gig for Inthemix50 (Australian top DJs poll) with Kid Kenobi, got the first draft of my new radio show ready, spent some time with my girlfriend Emily… and then was straight back on the plane, heading for Canada and the USA. I’ve got six dates here over two weekends, + three remixes to finish. Crazy schedule, but so much fun! Here’s a what’s been going on so far…
Day 1

The 14-hour flight from Sydney to Vancouver left me feeling, you could say, not so fresh. However I was too pumped for the tour for this to get in the way. Nothing a little disco nap in the hotel can’t fix. Being chauffeured around town in JT’s (the Vancouver promoter) new Porsche may have helped too. ;)
I’ve very recently added a drum machine (NI Maschine) to my DJ setup. It lets me write whole new songs on the spot and layer them with my records, plus it’s sooo much fun! I had a few new ideas on the flight over, so after a little practice jam in the hotel room, I was ready for the show.
The first show was at Shine nightclub. Unfortunately, this was the quietest of the three this weekend, but the crew who were there rocked out hard! There were fans from right back to my old, old breakbeat days. Represent! An improv tech house mashup of ‘Feeling Kinda Strange’ went down a treat.
Biggest track of the night was a Mark Knight edit of my song ‘Hey Ya’ that he gave me whilst in London the other week—thanks for that, mate!
Day 2

After a much needed sleep, I was up and on my way to San Francisco.
I arrived and was picked up by Juan from the Double Stacked crew. Him and Carlos took me out to an amazing Peruvian joint called Golden Inca. The best cebiche & chicha i have ever had! Later I was spoiled again when taken out for dinner and cocktails with Ginn and the Nocturnal crew as well!
By the time I arrived at the gig, I was full, and already happy with my day. That was then taken up a notch when I saw the place was packed and pumping! It was mayhem from start to finish. Hands were in the air, and speakers got knocked over. A good night.
Day 3
Kicked off this morning with a real American breakfast at In & Out Burger (animal style), then jumped on a flight to LA.
I got there no probs, but my bag didn’t. I had most of my gear in my carry on, but my Maschine was in my check in. I was surprised to see lots of people were also missing luggage. United Airlines has these self-service computer things to help you file a lost luggage claim. There’s heaps of them all over the place. Seems like this must happen quite a bit...Luckily my bag turned up on a flight only 90mins later.

This last show of the week was at the Love Festival. I knew it would be big, but wow! Epic would be a better word. This was possibly the biggest show I have ever played. Aside from that, it was just so much fun too. My new single ‘All Right (Bass Kleph Remix)’ went off large! but the biggest track of the night was probably a sneaky bootleg of mine called ‘Weakness for Warp’.
Next week I have three more shows. El Paso, Miami, and St Johns. That’s not for another four days though. So until then, I’ll be staying in Beverly Hills and catching up on some studio work. I have a bunch of remixes to finish including one for Stealth, plus three new tracks I wrote with Filthy Rich recently too.
Until next week…
