Bar Rumba relaunch finally gives Central London techno

Considering how many bars and clubs there are in central London, there’s a pathetic amount of credible electronic music nights in the centre of the city.

Basically there are none. But Bar Rumba on Shaftsbury Avenue (just off Piccadilly Circus) is set to host a newly refreshed music program that will include some of London’s most credible techno nights like Zombies Ate My Brain, Leftroom Records [check out their releases in the player below], Latenightaudio and LT Editions.

The question is, will London’s hardcore dance music fans venture into the area which is known only for its annoying tourists?

In the past of course, Bar Rumba has played host to some of London’s biggest drum & bass and breakbeat nights, including the famous d&b Thursday nighter Movement, which will still run fortnightly at Bar Rumba.

Over the years however, the club’s reputation for being a cool music venue has been replaced by the standard West End tourist vibe.

Door staff used to turn away people in jeans and t-shirts looking for a decent dance, in favour of out-of-towners wearing loafers and ironed shirts looking to get laid/pissed.

New musical director James Manero however claims the club will shape up for the relaunch on Friday 26th September.

“Anyone unaware of what’s happening inside the club and just looking for somewhere to drink ‘til 5am won’t get in,” he told DJ Magazine.

“We want a crowd who invests in their night, checking out the latest happenings on MySpace or Facebook, people coming to the club for a reason. A lot will be word of mouth, but we’re also expecting a lot of the existing regulars from the various parties.”

With The Cross, Turnmills, The Key and Canvas having closed recently, London’s club scene has been suffering.

A newly revitalised Bar Rumba could help fill that void.

Shane Watcha’s Zombies Ate My Brain take control of the relaunch party on 26th September.
